Today, over half a million overseas students are enrolled in Australian colleges and universities, as the country’s higher education system continues to grow from strength to strength.
The international spotlight shines on Australian education. As a desirable lifestyle choice, the southern hemisphere continent attracts students from around the world for its rich educational offerings. This is why admissions into Australian colleges and universities have continued to outperform nations around the world.
The burgeoning international demand for courses, the easing of the financial crisis, tightening British entry requirements and difficulties accessing US student visas, have all resulted in increased interest into Australian colleges and universities.
In fact, eight of the country’s universities are in the top 100 educational institutions globally. It is very common for international students who undertake a substantial course such as law, nursing, engineering or medicine to get identical or better results than other Australian students.
Meanwhile, the nation continues to rate ahead of British, United States, Canadian and New Zealand institutions for the perception of being safe, having a stable government, and increased access to residency and student visas. Admissions to colleges or universities in Australia follow the United Nations estimates that at least 3.5 million students study outside their own country. This is reflective in 2009, where 21.7% of all undergraduate students in Australian universities are overseas students.
International students perform academically well in Australia. This has been the consistent finding in three separate studies of students in Australian universities over the last 12 years. It is well known that Australian universities attract talented international students, and that the institutions are achieving successful outcomes in educating these international students.
The Australian Deputy Prime Minister and Education Minister encourages skilled international students to apply for student visas given the vast array of educational, cultural and lifestyle options available here for students. The Minister has stated, “Australia has a good alignment of safety, legislative support, visa access and the opportunity to take up residency.”
Worth noting is that admissions for popular courses and qualifications in the IT and accounting industries remain strong, however international students need to be aware that employment opportunities in these skilled areas are are highly competitive in Australia. The key to success in these vocational areas is to ensure that you enrol in a substantial course of up to three or four years in duration, this will strengthen your options in the employment market.
Vocational education continues to experience the fastest growth with enrolments up 40 per cent in 2009. However, students need to be very careful that they are supported by quality education providers and not tricked or exploited by rogue operators, agents or private colleges.
Studying in Australia is a great decision to make. It is recognised
that those who are successful in enrolling in Australian institutions
have generally been supported by quality education agents, and these
agents have contributed to a national increase of over 200,000 jobs,
increasing employment in Australia by approximately 1.2 per cent in
the last five years.
